Project Description:

Harris County Precinct One is seeking up to $1.5 million in grant funding from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for improvements at Challenger Seven Memorial Park. If awarded, improvements would expand access to the waterfront along Clear Creek and enhance the existing playground. The proposal specifically includes:

  • Replacing the boardwalk
  • Adding an immersive learning area with interpretive signage, a covered outdoor classroom and hand-on interactions with the native flora and fauna.
  • Renovating the existing concrete boat launch to include a floating dock and kayak access point.
  • Expanding native plant species, including trees and wetland plants.
  • Improving the playground with new pathways and more inclusive play space for children of all abilities.

The existing and proposed features are located within the floodplain and in wetland areas. Special considerations will be given in the design and construction phases to minimize any impacts to existing vegetation, soils, and habitat. All required permits and surveys will be conducted as part of the design.

Project Benefits:
  • Increasing access to the waterfront with an improved boardwalk and boat ramp.
  • Enhancing educational opportunities for people of all ages to learn about the Gulf Coast ecosystem.
  • Protecting the environment by preserving native trees and adding new native plants.
  • Inclusive playground elements for kids of all abilities to enjoy.
