HISD Sidewalks to Schools

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Safe sidewalks are essential for every neighborhood, especially near schools. Precinct One is currently constructing 5 miles of new sidewalks and ramps and repairing broken sidewalk panels around schools in Kashmere Gardens, Acres Homes and OST/South Union so that people of all ages, especially our kids, can safely get around the neighborhood.

Streets with sidewalks improvements include: 

Kashmere Gardens (Kashmere High, Cook Elementary, McGowan Elementary)

• Bennington St.
• Denmark St.
• Bonita St.
• Lavender St.
• Lockwood St.
• Shreveport St.
• Homestead Rd.
• Darien St.
• Apache St.

Acres Homes (Highland Heights Elementary)

• Knox St.
• Elkhart St
• Paul Quinn St
• Davidson St.
• Mansfield St.
• Maybell St.

OST/South Union (Whidby Elementary)

• Mainer St.
• Bacon St
• Tierwester St.
• Springhill St.

PROJECT BENEFITS:

Broken, unsafe sidewalks can limit opportunity and be a hazard for everyone in the neighborhood.  Precinct One is reconstructing or repairing sidewalks so HISD parents can have the peace of mind that their kids can safely and easily walk to school.

PROJECT UPDATES:

The bikeway will break ground in July 2022. Construction will last approximately 4 months.
